Valve’s Deadlock just pulled off something almost unheard of in modern gaming: it hit an all-time peak of 262,145 concurrent players on Steam. Here’s the catch — the game isn’t out. There’s no release date, no open beta, and you can’t buy it anywhere. The only way in is an invite from someone already playing.
The record-breaking surge comes courtesy of City Never Sleeps, the biggest update Deadlock has ever received. Valve’s New York-inspired map, The Cursed Apple, got a full visual overhaul. Lanes now have distinct identities — Broadway through the middle, Greenwich in green, York in yellow — while districts like the Theatre, Chinatown, the Haunted Lot, and the Plaza each carry their own themed look. Neutral creeps are now spectral Haunts, ghostly enemies that match their home districts.
The update also introduced six new heroes: Nurse Harrow, Rat King, Solomon, Deadman Danny, Baba, and Violet. They’re being rolled out in waves, with players voting in-game on the release order. The Rat King won the vote and arrived first, pushing the game past 228,000 concurrent players. Baba followed days later and lifted the record to 236,730 — and the count has kept climbing since.
There’s more under the hood too. City Never Sleeps added Steam Vents that grant temporary invisibility and health regeneration, Tough Crates that need a heavy melee attack to crack open, Healing Snacks hidden around the map, a new Broker system, Corrupted Items, revamped shop menus, an enhanced event feed, and sweeping UI improvements.
What’s fascinating is the compounding effect of the invite system. Every hero drop doubles as a player-count event: new characters draw attention, players chase invites from friends, and the player pool is bigger before the next drop. Each record quietly becomes the baseline for the next one.
Many now expect Deadlock to join Counter-Strike and Dota 2 as a permanent fixture at the top of Steam’s charts. The only real question is when — or whether — Valve will finally open the gates and let everyone in.
