US Console Sales Crater as Prices Hit Record Highs

With just over a month to go before Grand Theft Auto VI arrives, the US console market is in the worst shape it has seen in years. New data from Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shows that hardware sales for both Xbox and PlayStation have fallen sharply through the first eight months of 2026 — while the prices buyers actually pay keep climbing.

Between January and August 2026, Xbox console sales in the US fell 33 percent compared to the same period in 2025, the worst January-to-August stretch ever recorded for the platform. PlayStation hardware dropped 25 percent, its lowest level for that period since 2013. August alone tells the same story: just 559,000 consoles sold across all brands, down 15 percent year over year, the worst August since 2013. Xbox fell 31 percent in August, its worst August since 2020, while PlayStation slipped 11 percent to its lowest August total in 13 years.

The problem is on the price tag. So far in 2026, US buyers paid an average of $529 for an Xbox — up 26 percent from a year earlier — and $597 for a PlayStation, up 20 percent. Both are all-time highs for the American market. Piscatella points to persistent component shortages as a key driver, with demand from AI data-center builds pushing up memory and hardware costs across the industry.

The numbers hide a strange twist: Sony’s PlayStation revenue actually rose 17 percent in August even as unit sales fell, simply because each console now sells for so much more. The Nintendo Switch 2 remains the bright spot, leading the US market in both units and revenue in August and year to date.

The big open question is whether GTA 6 can change the trajectory. Rockstar’s blockbuster launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only — no PC version at launch — which could push holdouts to finally buy a current-gen box. Piscatella suggests the game may soften the decline, but warns that the high prices and component availability heading into the holidays are real obstacles. A player willing to spend on GTA 6 might still balk at paying several hundred dollars more for the machine it runs on.

If sales rebound in November and December, GTA 6 will have proved a single game can still move hardware. If not, Sony and Microsoft will face a harder question about whether ever-pricier consoles can keep attracting new players. We start getting the answer on November 19.
