After weeks of pre-orders, ASUS’s anniversary handheld is finally reaching buyers. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 starts shipping today, October 15, with Canadian shoppers first in line through Best Buy and the ASUS Store, and the United States launch carrying the same date and a $1,299 standalone price.
The X20 marks 20 years of Republic of Gamers, and it looks the part. Its shell is translucent black, showing off gold-accented internals and the reworked cooling system underneath. It is a throwback to the see-through gadgets of the late 1990s, dressed up for 2026.
The biggest upgrade is the screen. The X20 debuts ROG’s first Nebula HDR display on an Ally: a 7.4-inch OLED panel at 1080p with a 120Hz refresh rate, FreeSync Premium Pro variable refresh, Dolby Vision, and up to 1,400 nits of peak HDR brightness. It is larger and far richer than the 7-inch LCD on last year’s Ally X, and it should make the biggest difference in everyday play.
Inside, the hardware carries over from the Ally X. The same AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor drives it, backed by 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, a 1TB SSD, and an 80Wh battery, all running Windows 11 Home. Performance should feel familiar to anyone who has used the Ally X. With the X20, the money goes toward the display, the controls, and the design rather than raw speed.
The controls get meaningful attention. The X20 uses TMR joysticks, which sense stick position magnetically and are designed to resist the drift that wears down traditional sticks. Its transforming D-pad switches between a classic four-direction cross and a circular eight-direction layout, and ASUS adds quieter face buttons, rubberized grips, impulse triggers, two assignable back buttons, and HD haptics.
Buyers can also pick a collector’s bundle. Priced at $2,499.99 in the United States and C$3,499 in Canada, and sold only through the ASUS Store, it adds ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 AR glasses, a dbrand Killswitch case with a custom skin and joystick covers, a Pelican Protector Case with a 20th anniversary badge, and a 68W charger. The glasses project a virtual screen of up to 171 inches at 4 meters. ASUS first showed the X20 as bundle-only, then added the standalone version after fans pushed back.
At $1,299, the X20 costs about $300 more than the Ally X did at launch, so it is not an obvious upgrade for current Ally X owners. For new buyers who want an OLED screen, drift-resistant sticks, and a handheld that stands out on a shelf, it is the best version of the Ally yet. The standalone model is available at Best Buy and the ASUS Store, while the bundle is an ASUS Store exclusive.
