Physical game discs are not dead — at least not at Xbox. Microsoft has posted a job listing for an “Xbox Games Supply Strategist” on its Xbox Supply Chain team, and the role’s description makes the company’s direction clear: physical Xbox games are sticking around for the foreseeable future.
The listing, first spotted by IdleSloth84_ on X, says the new hire will “coordinate the launch of physical Xbox games across all platforms,” running the entire journey of a boxed game from factory floor to store shelf. The strategist will work with the company’s Product Marketing, Finance, and other internal teams to plan global supply, position inventory, and track sales performance across each game’s lifecycle.
That wording matters. Companies do not hire supply-chain strategists to manage the launch of physical games across all platforms if they plan to wind down disc production. The role exists specifically to keep boxed games flowing — which reads as a deliberate bet on physical media at a moment when the rest of the industry is drifting the other way.
The timing is hard to ignore. Sony confirmed in July 2026 that it is ending all physical disc production in January 2028, meaning future PlayStation releases will be digital-only. Meanwhile Xbox recently launched its Disc-to-Digital program, which lets players claim digital versions of “thousands” of Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S disc games by inserting the disc into a compatible console — with the disc still working as normal afterward. Keeping discs alive while smoothing the path to digital looks like a two-track strategy: serve collectors and disc loyalists now, and do not punish them later.
For players, the stakes are real. Physical games can be resold, lent, and collected; they work without download queues and survive server shutdowns. A dedicated role inside Microsoft’s supply chain suggests Xbox intends to keep that option on the table while rivals close it.
Of course, a job listing is not a press release. The role covers physical launches “across all platforms” — which in Microsoft’s multiplatform era includes Xbox’s own games released on PlayStation and Nintendo hardware — so the strategist’s portfolio may be broader than just Xbox-branded boxes. But the signal is unmistakable: Microsoft is staffing up for physical games, not winding them down.
Xbox has not said whether its next console, Project Helix, will include a disc drive. Until it does, listings like this one are the closest thing players have to an answer — and right now, that answer is green.
