About this story
Something is stirring in the deep end of the gaming world. The official Ecco the Dolphin website — quiet for years except for a mysterious timer — is now counting down its final hours, and fans of the Sega classic believe a big reveal is about to surface.
The countdown has been the site’s centerpiece for months. At one point it showed more than 8,500 hours remaining, roughly a full year, but as of this weekend the timer has ticked down to its last day. Nobody outside the studio knows exactly what happens when it hits zero, but everything points to the first real look at the Ecco revival that has been quietly taking shape.
The project is led by Ed Annunziata, the original creator of the 1992 Sega Genesis classic. Last year, in an interview with Xbox Wire, Annunziata confirmed that he and the entire original team had reunited to remaster both Ecco the Dolphin and its sequel, Ecco: The Tides of Time — and then build an all-new third game with contemporary play and graphics sensibilities. The studio, A&R Atelier, is made up of original team members.
The remastered package, called Ecco the Dolphin: Complete, is shaping up to be more than a simple facelift. Alongside visual and audio upgrades, it will include built-in speedrunning tools, achievements, and leaderboards — all firsts for the franchise. The most ambitious addition is a "meta quests" system that lets players build and share custom courses by combining levels from across the series, from the 8-bit Master System versions to the Genesis originals and the new game.
