About this story
Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has weighed in on AI in game development, and his message is clear: tools can take over tasks, but they cannot replace the human act of creating.
Miyamoto, 73, Nintendo Representative Director and Fellow, spoke at an October 22 press conference at Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters, reported by Famitsu. As AI tools spread through game production, he framed the shift as a chance to rethink what creating really means.
“The more tasks AI takes off our hands, the more it gives everyone a chance to seriously think about what true creation really is,” he said.
His key distinction is between “creating” and “doing work.” Creating, in his view, means setting the overarching framework and intent behind something. Doing work means filling in blanks and polishing what already exists. The danger, he warned, is confusing the two.
