ARC Raiders Hits 6-Month Player Peak After Frozen Trail

Embark Studios is having a week worth celebrating. Its extraction shooter ARC Raiders just hit its highest Steam player count in six months, with 131,388 people raiding at once within the first day of the game’s biggest update.

The spike lines up with two things: the launch of the Frozen Trail 2.0 update and a free weekend that runs through October 12. Anyone can download and play the full game at no cost, and Embark is sweetening the deal for converts — the base game is half off on all platforms through October 15.

Frozen Trail is a chunky patch by any measure. It adds Pendola Pass, a snowy new map battered by winter weather, plus fresh enemy types, new weapons, a reworked skill tree, and a grappling hook for getting around faster. Raiders also get The Outpost, a customizable base with hundreds of furniture options to make the time between raids feel like home.

Not every change went down smoothly. Embark pulled Solo vs. Squads from matchmaking, saying it wants players using all the matchmaking options instead of queuing solo against full squads. The studio says it will re-evaluate the mode after a rework, which reads like “maybe later, maybe never” until further notice.

On the horizon, a co-op mode test kicks off October 13, and Embark says anti-cheat work continues — welcome news for anyone who has watched extraction shooters get eaten alive by cheaters before.

The real question is whether the crowd sticks around. Free weekends are great at filling lobbies, and player counts almost always deflate when the paywall goes back up. But a six-month peak is a six-month peak: for a game that launched a year ago this week, Frozen Trail looks like the shot of adrenaline ARC Raiders needed.
