Wing Commander 3 Remaster Announced With Restored FMVs

One of the most cinematic PC games of the 1990s is getting a second life. Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella has announced Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger – 30th Anniversary Edition, revealed during a game-preservation panel at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo this past weekend.

The announcement came out of a panel with an apt name: “The Lost Tapes: Preserving the EA Vault and Restoring an FMV Classic.” While digitizing EA’s video archives, Vessella recovered roughly 600 original source tapes from the game’s production — the master footage behind Wing Commander 3’s live-action cutscenes, which fans had long feared were lost or degraded. That footage will now serve as the foundation of the remaster.

According to slides from the presentation, the new edition will include both original-source and upscaled versions of the full-motion video sequences, plus 60 frames-per-second gameplay, controller support, and post-release community enhancement patches. The presentation also listed “Kilrathi Saga” integration — a strong hint the package could bundle the earlier games in the series — with Steam, GOG, and the EA app named as the planned storefronts.

To see why this matters, rewind to 1994. Wing Commander 3 shipped with more than two hours of filmed story sequences woven between its space-combat missions, marketed at the time as something close to an interactive movie. The cast was Hollywood-grade for a video game: Mark Hamill played pilot Christopher Blair, backed by Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys-Davies, Tim Curry, and Ginger Lynn Allen. But the technology of the era couldn’t do the footage justice — the video was squeezed down to a blurry 240p with heavy compression, and while the sequel’s later DVD re-release improved its own footage, Wing Commander 3 never got the same treatment.

That made the recovered tapes a big deal. If the originals had been gone, a true restoration would have been impossible. Instead, the tapes survived, and EA — a publisher not exactly famous for lavishing attention on its back catalog — is putting them to use. There is no release date or price yet, and EA has not issued a formal announcement beyond Vessella’s presentation. But for preservation-minded fans, the news itself is enough: one of gaming’s great lost blockbusters is finally coming home.
