ARC Raiders Beginner Guide: Survive Your First 10 Runs

ARC Raiders is Embark Studios’ PvPvE extraction shooter: you deploy from Speranza into the Rust Belt, grab loot, dodge killer ARC machines and rival raiders, then extract before it all goes to waste. Die with a custom loadout and everything you carried — except what sits in your safe pocket — is gone.

If your first raids end in a panic, a red screen, and an empty inventory, you are doing what every new raider does. The fix is not better aim — it is better decisions. These tips keep you alive long enough to get rich.

1. Run free loadouts until you know the maps

The biggest rookie mistake is bringing your best gear into early raids. You will die a lot while learning layouts, ARC patrol routes, and extraction points — and dying with rare weapons and augments is throwing resources away. Use the free loadouts (top of the loadout screen) for your first 20 to 30 extractions. They come with random basic gear and zero permanent loss, so you learn with no gear fear. Save the good stuff for when you know the map.

2. Holster your weapon to sprint faster

Press H on PC, Triangle on PS5, or Y on Xbox to holster your weapon — you sprint noticeably faster than with a gun drawn. The game never explains this clearly, but the difference is real. Holster between locations, draw only to fight. Those extra seconds of speed often decide whether you reach extraction in time.

3. Spend your first skill points on Stamina and Health Regen

Damage upgrades are tempting, but survival is your only priority early on. Pour your first five levels into Stamina and Health Regeneration — sprinting a few extra seconds to escape a Snitch or a Leaper is worth more than a small damage bump. Later, Conditioning skills cut stamina costs and Utility skills improve healing. Mobility is king in the current meta.

4. Trade your augment at the clinic — and use your safe pocket

Never sell your free loadout augment at the vendor. Trade it at the clinic for far better value. Your safe pocket is the most important inventory you own: anything in it survives your death. Always stash your rarest material, quest item, or best augment there before pushing into danger.

5. Keep an ARC power cell in your quick-use bar

ARC power cells are not just crafting materials — using one mid-raid charges a portion of your shield in an emergency. One of the most useful early survival tools in the game, and it is barely explained anywhere. Keep one slotted on every run.

6. Don’t shoot other raiders on sight

Opening fire on sight gets you killed more often than it pays off. Try communicating instead: a quick “friendly” voice line can turn a deadly encounter into shared loot or an escort to extraction. Bonus reason: matchmaking adjusts to your aggression level — consistently aggressive players land in more hostile lobbies.

7. Set an extraction rule — and obey it

Greed kills more raiders than ARC machines. Decide before each run what a good haul looks like, then leave when you hit it. Extraction zones are prime ambush spots, so scout before calling an elevator: use smoke grenades to block sightlines, and if a beacon looks sketchy, rotate to another extraction point instead of gambling the whole run.

8. Listen before you loot

ARC Raiders runs on audio — mechanical footsteps, drone hums, and scanning beams warn you long before you see anything. Sprinting, slamming doors, and stepping on glass announce your position to everything nearby. And don’t fight every ARC: each fight costs ammo, healing, and armor, and it draws attention. Before engaging, ask: does it block my path, is the loot worth it, can I kill it fast, and am I ready for reinforcements? If no, disengage or stay hidden.

9. Upgrade Scrappy and your stash early

Scrappy, your loot rooster back at base, gathers materials while you raid — collect his haul after every run and upgrade him so he brings back better resources. Just as important: expand your stash early. Veteran players almost universally regret putting it off, and spare guns sell for good coins, so don’t hoard duplicates.

10. Bring utilities — and more ammo than you think

Utilities are ridiculously strong: smoke grenades cover healing and extractions, barricades and mines guard rooms, Arc Lures distract ARC machines or send them after other players, and ziplines open fast repositioning. Always bring at least one. And you never have enough ammo — pack extra even at the cost of loot space, because running dry mid-fight is one of the fastest ways to die. If you find keys, use them: locked rooms hold the best loot, but they attract attention, so secure the area first.

11. Track materials and recycle smart

At your workbench in Speranza, track the materials you need for upgrades — tracked items get an in-world icon, so you stop filling your pack with junk. Salvage in the field only when you are full; otherwise recycle back at base for maximum yield. And learn the Workshop early: crafting weapons, gear, and consumables is where real long-term progress happens.

Common rookie mistakes to avoid

  • Bringing your best gear before you know the map — learn on free loadouts first.
  • Hoarding rare gear forever out of fear — once confident, use it to learn it.
  • Staying for “one more room” — three small successful raids beat one greedy failure.
  • Sprinting everywhere — noise is a death sentence in the Rust Belt.
  • Ignoring the Workshop, clinic trades, stash upgrades, and Scrappy visits.

ARC Raiders rewards patience, awareness, and smart decisions over heroics. Learn the loop, bank small wins, and the Rust Belt starts paying you back.
