Xbox Cloud Gaming Gets Pay-As-You-Go: $4 for 10 Hours

Xbox cloud gaming is breaking out of Game Pass. Microsoft has started selling Cloud Playtime Packs to Xbox Insiders: blocks of cloud streaming time you buy on their own, with no Game Pass subscription required.

The packs come in 3 sizes at introductory launch pricing: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99 — roughly $0.40 down to $0.24 per hour. Bought time is ad-free, comes with shorter wait times and higher-quality streaming, and never expires: unused hours stay on your account until you spend them. Insiders also get a free, ad-supported streaming option.

The catch is that a pack includes no games. You stream cloud-playable games you already own, which makes this very different from Game Pass Ultimate, where the library is the point. For players who own their games and only stream now and then — or Xbox One owners playing Series X|S games without buying new hardware — buying hours can work out cheaper than keeping a subscription.

The bigger change lands in November, when the packs open to everyone and Game Pass itself gets cloud limits: Ultimate members will get 15 cloud hours a month, Premium 10, and Essential 5, with paid packs as the way to top up. Microsoft estimates only about 4% of subscribers stream enough to hit those caps.

It’s the clearest sign yet that Microsoft is unbundling the cloud from Game Pass — turning game streaming into its own pay-as-you-go product, priced by the hour.
