Sony has put a date on it. Grand Theft Auto 5 will leave the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog on November 17, 2026 — exactly two days before Grand Theft Auto 6 arrives.
The news reached players through a system notification on PlayStation 5, inviting subscribers to take one last trip to Los Santos while they count down to the sequel. The message lays out two options: jump into GTA 5 now, or pre-order GTA 6.
The timing is no accident. GTA 6 launches on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and clearing its predecessor out of the subscription catalog just before launch is a classic move. Sony gets a final burst of engagement from one of the biggest games ever, and Rockstar gets a clean runway where the only way to keep playing in that world is to buy the new one.
None of this should surprise longtime subscribers. GTA 5 has cycled in and out of the Extra catalog repeatedly since December 2023 — this is its third stint — and Red Dead Redemption 2 has followed a similar pattern. Rockstar’s biggest games tend to appear on the service for a few months, disappear, and eventually return. So while this farewell is real, it is probably not permanent.
What it does mean is that after November 17, Extra and Premium members who have not bought the game will lose access to it through the subscription, including GTA Online. Anyone in the middle of a playthrough, or still working through the story of Franklin, Michael, and Trevor, should either finish up or pick up a copy to keep their progress.
The full list of games leaving PS Plus in November will be revealed on October 20, when the next batch of catalog additions is announced. GTA 5 is simply the first confirmed departure — and, given the calendar, the most symbolic one.
For now, subscribers still have more than a month to revisit Los Santos. After years of waiting, the countdown to Vice City is almost over — but the old city deserves one last drive first.
